The Opening Ceremony of the European Universities Futsal Championship Zagreb 2025 took place on July 18 at the iconic Sports Hall Dražen Petrović. The vibrant celebration officially marked the beginning of an exciting week of elite university futsal in the heart of Croatia’s capital.

  • Tomislav Paškvalin, Sports Commissioner to the President of Croatia, delivered a message from the President, underlining that futsal is a sport of youth, energy, and speed — and that Zagreb is now its proud home.

A Championship of Excellence

The event is organized by the Zagreb Academic Sports Federation and the European University Sports Association (EUSA), with the support of the University of Zagreb, the Croatian Academic Sports Federation, the Ministry of Tourism and Sport, the City of Zagreb, and the Croatian Football Federation.

Zagreb and its university have a rich tradition of hosting major university sports events, beginning with the FISU World University Rowing Championship (1998). Since then, the city has continued to strengthen its position as a trusted host, organizing the 4th European Universities Rowing Championship (2008), the European Universities Futsal Championship (2010), the European Universities Games (2016), the European Universities Beach Championship and European Universities Combat Championship (2019), the European Universities Combat Championship (2023), and the European Universities Rowing Championship (2024). This legacy ensures a high level of professionalism and hospitality, supported by strong institutional commitment and local engagement.

Energy, Culture, and Celebration

The atmosphere in the venue was electric — music, dance, and enthusiastic delegations filled the hall with energy. The March of Athletes brought cheers from the audience, with athletes proudly carrying their flags and representing their institutions on the international stage.

A dynamic performance by Residence Dance Studio, accompanied by drumming group Percussion, showcased a mix of urban dance, breakdance, jazz, and acrobatics — a celebration of Zagreb’s cultural spirit and creative youth.

Many of the volunteers, primarily students from the host university, shared their pride in contributing to the organization of the event, embodying the values of teamwork and community.

Looking Ahead

Organizers hope the Championship will be remembered not only for its competitive spirit but also for its long-lasting impact on university sport in the region — inspiring future athletes and setting a high standard for international events.
